The original was designed to look rather ugly, but it was a credible off-roader.
SsangYong's 2011 update of its Korando model is labeled "Classic Utility Vehicle",
but what class does the new crossover really have?
SsangYong Korando - These are names that don't mean much to us in the West,
but a Korando model has existed since 1974 and SsangYong claims it as the oldest brand in Korea,
the SsangYong element saw a little less continuity.
Many names have been associated with the brand, including Daewoo, Mercedes Benz,
the Chinese manufacturer SAIC and the Indian company Mahindra &, Mahindra.
The last of this list is expected to enter into a "global partnership" with SsangYong towards the end of 2010 -
if everything goes as planned. Notice that this is now a picture of stability compared to 2009,
when Korean factories were the scene of two months of violent protests,
riots and accusations made by the police.
South Koreans say a lot that, despite the recent unrest,
they managed to continue and produce new models. The latest addition, the Korando crossover,
is one of the greatest advances in society. It is the company’s first monocoque construction.
Qashqai, Nissan's cash cow, plus the new Kia Sportage and others taking over
of a valuable market, it is a necessary step for a company that wishes to expand
her empire and leave the past behind her.
It feels rather bulky and heavy and rather deep, without instantly attracting those who want
really use its crossover ability. In motion, this impression persists.
There's a slight feeling of overweight, underpowered about it.
The steering is really rather lifeless and non-communicative, especially around the position
in the rear, and the handling is on the slightly soggy side - the Korando is nothing particularly
crispy.
There is only one option at the moment: a 2.0-liter turbodiesel that debuted in
the Kyron SUV. It is paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.
There is also the option of two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive models. From the outside,
The engine sounds distinctly diesel, but from the inside it's rather quiet.
Under load, certain noise, vibration and harshness are acceptable,
but if you are not actually under the load and are simply drifting,
the sound is silently calm and vibration-free.
The power can be described as adequate, but no more. Below 2000 rpm,
it tends to fade and die on occasion, enough so that many experienced pilots
on launch find themselves stalling and having to restart to try to get away
or maneuver gently. At the other end, the power also decreases,
so you need to keep it approximately between 2000 and 3500 rpm.
It's a bit difficult and means rowing the six-speed gearbox frequently.
