The 2014 Nissan Titan PRO-X is not, despite its long list of options, including a so-called Package
luxury, lifestyle truck. There is a distinct absence of chrome on the exterior and no machined leather
(or machined leather-effect vinyl) inside. It doesn't even have running boards, you have to climb onto the seat of the
driver. It's very good. It's a truck, a good truck, and for over a week, it allowed me to
doing all the cool things I look forward to doing (hitting the gas station not being one of them).
I say this even after being pampered by the 2014 GMC Sierra Denali for an extended testing period.
Although lacking in faux wood, the Nissan's interior was perfectly adequate. Not luxurious at all, but
well put together with plenty of space for coffee cups, passengers and anything else you might want
take with you. Nissan isn't as afraid of knobs or buttons as other automakers,
the result is generally a radio/infotainment/climate control system that is easy to use
and intuitive, even with gloved hands. The Titan's configuration is no different, except for one
5.8-inch touchscreen that seemed small and difficult to reach from the driver's seat.
The 5.7-liter V8 is more than capable of getting the truck moving, even when loaded with a half-ton
of things. The PRO-4X is supposed to be the off-road Titan, and while I haven't taken the off-road truck in
itself, it got me from point A to point B in really unpleasant weather. He plowed through benches
of snow and crossed icy, unplowed streets with ease - and I looked for large snow banks
and exceptionally icy streets just for the heck of it. As a bonus (if you are a fan of configurations 4
traditional drive wheels, simple and meaty), the thing is a beast to steer in tight spaces
with the system engaged. So you know it works, I guess.
But there are a few areas where the truck's relative lack of refinement really shows, especially after
spent a lot of time behind the wheels of the competition. Find a few potholes or a bumpy road
and you'll go back in time until the big pickups rumble and rock and bounce on the
obstacles. It's not a deal killer for a full size, and it never gets uncomfortable, but I
don't see Nissan grabbing many former Chevy customers here.
Plus, you'll be in for a shock the first few times you top off its tank - its 28-gallon tank.
Looking at the Chevy Silverado, however, I see that the tank size ranges from 26 to 34 gallons.
One of the ongoing costs of driving these utility vehicles is big-ticket refueling. There's
will be getting a diesel within the next year, so that's something to keep in mind.
