The Crossfire coupe has now been joined by an open-top Roadster that will rival the BMW Z4, Nissan 350Z, Audi TT Roadster and Honda S2000.
Although the front is the same as its coupe version, the rear is less spectacular with a plastic tonneau hiding the fabric roof when retracted.
Like the coupe, it has a retractable spoiler that activates when the car reaches 60 mph
and uses Mercedes-Benz's older 3.2-liter V6 engine.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, heated glass rear window,
air conditioning, leather steering wheel, electronic stability program, assistance
emergency braking and cruise control.
In fact, the only two options available are special paint and a navigation system
by satellite.
While most roadster versions carry a considerable premium over their equivalent
coupe, the Crossfire convertible only costs €735 more. Maybe this means that the bosses
of Chrysler privately believe that the coupe is priced a bit high.
According to the company's marketing gurus, most Crossfire drivers are
likely business leaders or owners with an average age of 43
and probably don't have young children at home, which is just as well as this two-seater
is not ideal for family outings.
Chrysler Group Executive Director of International Sales and Marketing T. Hausch
said: 'We designed this vehicle to be a high-speed roadster and the result
is a stunning convertible that's compact, solid and well-designed - and also looks great with
the trunk raised.
“Even with the integration of a fabric top, our designers took on the challenge of maintaining the
Crossfire's distinctive lines and dynamic proportions.
“Sometimes when you remove the roof to create a convertible, the result is not as
that you are waiting for. With the Crossfire Roadster, that's not true. He's just as beautiful, if not more
dashing, than the coupe. »
CAP Monitor estimates that the Roadster will hold its value as well as the coupe, with 48% of its
value retained after three years / 60,000 miles and 47% for automatic - an investment
wise for fleets.
Expect high-performance versions of the Crossfire and Roadster in the future,
both using a supercharged version of the 3.2-liter V6.
Having spent a very enjoyable week behind the wheel of the Crossfire coupe recently, I was looking forward to
to try the roadster version and my chance came on a gloriously hot day.
Getting on board reminded me of when I tested the coupe - I was seduced by its retro look and,
although the interior is plastic and not what you expect from a car with a price of
almost £30,000, she had enough charm to make up for it.
There are few things I like better than a period of driving under the open sky, in the sun,
especially when I'm in a car that invites passers-by to take photos twice
as they try to take another look.
The automatic roof is activated by a button on the center console. It goes down in 22 seconds,
but having to lower the hood manually to finally lock it was awkward.
It was stiff and needed a tug to make sure it fit properly.
I suspect it will soften over time, but I would have preferred the whole process
or fully automatic.
Driving with the top down caused quite a bit of wind noise and a bit of shaking,
but it's a very small sacrifice to make for the pleasure of open-top driving.
Either way, convertible aficionados will be well used to it.
