Nissan North America introduced its new Titan XD. We traveled the landscape to the northeast
of Scottsdale, where open spaces have allowed our modern pickups to stretch their muscles and show off
what they can do.
Titan XD, for eXtra Duty, is a big step forward for Nissan. The original Titan full-size pickup from
the company had some advanced ideas when it was introduced in 2004 as a 2005 model, but it didn't
not much progress since then. Sales stagnated when the company's engineers and designers
have turned their attention to automobiles and vans, and competitors have constantly improved
their products.
The new Titan retains some of these early features, such as a spray-in bedliner
optional factory applied and a range of cargo securing and storage devices, and has acquired
sharp exterior styling, refined interior trim and - perhaps most notably -
Cummins Turbo Diesel Power.
This is the first on-road use of the engine maker's 5.0 liter (305 cubic inch) diesel V8.
A reinforced chassis pushes Titan into a weight classification that falls between half-ton pickups
and three-quarters of a ton. With a combined gross weight of approximately 8,800 pounds (8,960 pounds for a 4x4),
The Titan XD belongs to Class 2B, according to Rich Miller, Titan's chief product specialist. Because he
is expected to carry and pull less than the competition's "heavy-duty" Class 2C pickup trucks, springs
and the Titan XD's shocks can be softer, resulting in a smoother ride.
Driving several demonstration trucks confirmed Miller and his colleagues' claims
regarding good ride quality and substantial performance. The Cummins built in Indiana,
with its 310 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque, worked with an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission
made in Indiana to speed up every truck with limited authority. The trucks were really moving,
but without noise or harshness, and the gear changes were smooth and discreet.
The eight-cylinder diesel seemed busy, but a glance at the tach showed it was revving at less than
200 revs of the biggest Cummins straight-six diesel engine (aka ISB6.7) I've driven in
Ram HD pickup trucks. When I put my foot in it, the Titan XD's diesel V8 was revving well past 3,000 rpm,
but that didn't happen much.
Loaded or empty, the Titan XDs rode smoothly on sidewalks or rough off-road trails.
Their four-wheel drive systems allowed them to climb like goats and travel trails
rocky terrain that I wouldn't subject my own truck to. The tremors occur on these difficult routes,
but were a little quieter than in trucks with stiffer springs.
