Nissan has brought a true full-size truck to market since the Titan was introduced for 2004,
and during its run, the truck saw significant improvements. Last year, the power of its V8
5.6L engine was increased to 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of peak torque, this year the lineup was expanded to include
long-wheelbase models and a new off-road package.
Titan chassis are now available in two wheelbase lengths: 139.8 and 159.5 inches.
Adding almost 2 feet to the stretched version allowed for longer beds - 7 feet behind the cabin
multi seater and 8 behind the King cabin - which is good news for anyone wanting to transport
more than a potted tree in the bed of the crew cabin. (To be fair, we once saw a Titan
Crew cab SWB carrying two dirt bikes in the bed. But they were 100cc Hondas,
and the owner had to open the tailgate to make even these short bikes fit.)
The other addition to the 2008 Titan lineup is the Pro-4X Off-Road Package, which includes Rancho shocks,
P275/70R18 BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/As, additional skid plates, lower gear of
3.357:1 in pumpkins and one electrically. rear differential locker operated - thing not available
on the Toyota.
To refresh our memories of driving a Titan, we borrowed one to take on our
test site in Arizona, and it proved to be a very comfortable long-distance hauler.
The cloth bucket seats were comfortable and comfortable, giving us no hint of fatigue
even after six hours behind the wheel. We expected the Ranchos to firm up the Titan's ride,
but even with these improvements, the truck was compliant on all road surfaces we
encountered. The 5.6L V8's output is lower than the Tundra's 5.7, but the Titan never missed
of grunt and delivered a best 16.34 mpg on the highway, close to its EPA rating of 17 mpg. Any complaints?
I don't really have one.
