Inside, the Double Cab and Crew Max Tundras are as roomy as their Nissan counterparts, although
Toyota has found more places to store larger compartments, a larger center console, etc.
The Tundra's seats, which were wide, flat, stiff and unsupportive, were a big disappointment.
We could have used a little more cuddling, given the truck's somewhat firm ride. For
Anecdotally, we've heard many complaints about the Tundra's harsh ride quality at
from owner reports and even YouTube videos. Our first-hand experience has not been
as bad as we've heard, read and seen, although almost all of our test Tundras were
equipped with the TRD Off-Road Package, which includes a nice set of Bilstein shocks.
So if you're in the market for one of these trucks, which one should you choose?
In some ways they are very similar. Both are available with large V-8 engines that are at
same level of performance as domestic V-8s. Both trucks feature dual front suspensions.
triangulation/coil spring and live axles suspended by leaves at the rear. Both are
available with off-road option packs that improve suspensions, tires.
Both offer a choice of wheelbases and bed lengths to suit your work and style of work.
life.
But there are also big differences between the two. You have more choices with Toyota-three engines
compared to Nissan's and a regular cab option in addition to the two four-doors. The advantage of
Toyota's power also gives it a functional advantage, with payload and
towing capabilities superior to those of Nissan. You get six speeds in Toyota's automatic transmission
(the top two gears are overdrives) and the option of a 4.30:1 axle ratio, compared
to Nissan's five-speed automatic and axle gears that only go down to 3.357:1.
And speaking of axles, the Titan's rear axle is a small variation similar to a Dana 44, where the Tundra
is available with a massive 101/2 inch ring gear similar to a Corporate 14 bolt. With the Toyota,
you can get a rear view camera mounted in the tailgate handle, which is very useful for hanging
a trailer. The Nissan only offers a proximity sensor that beeps in reverse when you
you are approaching something. On the other hand, only the Nissan is available with a rear differential
lockable from the factory, a big plus in our mind.
And then there are the subjective things: in the long term, some of us prefer conformity of the
Nissan's Pro-4X suspension to Toyota's TRD setup. We also found the seats of the Nissan
much more comfortable than those of the Toyota. There was, however, one driver in our group, who found
that firmer seats and suspension were better.
Another point to consider: Many of these features will be affected when you add hardware
spare, what we are going to do.
